The top picture shows a shaft that is definitely good to use again. The splines are not damaged at all. They have no burrs or nicks. The splines are all straight and where you can count them.

 

The next picture shows a shaft that is badly damaged. The splines have been worn down. It was not put in properly or it had torsional stress to the input shaft.  Also heavy load conditions can cause this problem too.

 

It is always good to check the manufacture recommendations for installing a shaft.
