Sundstrand Sauer Danfoss Series 20 – Variable Pump Tilting Swashplate

The variable displacement pump has a tiltable swashplate to vary displacement output flow. The swashplate that is mounted to the trunnion bearings and is connected to hydraulic control (servo) cylinders. The control regulates fluid to and from the servo cylinders making the swashplate to tilt and change up displacement of the pump. The swashplate has the capability to be tilted in either direction from 0 angle and give the pump flow in either direction.

With the angle of the swashplate causes the pistons to stroke in and out of the cylinder block bores as it is rotated, making the angle vary the piston stroke and the amount of fluid that is displaced to the motor. It changes the output speed of the motor also. Tilting the swashplate in the other direction reverses fluid flow to the motor and the direction of rotation. Each servo control cylinder is spring loaded, the loss of control pressure ore charge pressure can cause the swashplate to go back to neutral position it was in.
