Premounted bearings are units come with their own housings, adapters and seals assembled to provide their convenient mounting to equipment. The parts are self contained, which provides protection, lubrication and operation of the bearing. They have both plain and rolling element bearings in certain designs to fit a wide range  of shaft sizes and mountings. They have the same characteristics as the unmounted types.

The pillow blocks, take ups and flange units are the most common types of premounted bearings. They all have different variations, but all are of the three basic types.

Rigid premounted units need spot on alignment of the bearing with the shaft. Self aligning units allow for some give and take, shaft defection and for changes which may occur after the unit is installed. Sometimes, self alignment is gotten by the use of separate inner housings which give a ball and socket action between the inner and the out housings.
