You need lubrication to help provide a smooth interaction between moving parts. It makes a film on the parts so one part can move smoothly over the other to give positive reaction for the job at hand. If you want your pistons to go up and down in the cylinders it needs lubrication to do it’s job to help move the car.

When two moving surfaces with loads on them need to move smoothly when they are under pressure, hence the lubrication. There are different classifications of lubricants:

Liquid

Semisolid

Solid

Gas

Liquids could be mineral oil, oil from animals or vegetables. Which liquid is the most prevailant. And you have your synthetic and man made oils also.

Semisolid are different types of greases. Grease has a thickening agent that is added to mineral oils or the synthetic oils.

Solid oils are in the form of metals or solid types of chemicals that in use when temperatures outside are lower and other types of oils would freeze up. And you can use in the higher temperatures where other oils would just burn up.

Gas is used when you need precise movements of parts when temperatures go from one extreme to another so the applications goes smoothly when parts are under that much pressure, where the most common oils would not help in these types of situations.

It just depends on the job at hand, the parts you are using to do the job and temperatures. So take all that into consideration when you are starting a job.
